The basis of infrared radiation

Home    更新    The basis of infrared radiation

The three main modes of heat transfer are:

  • Conduction-When two objects of different temperatures touch each other, heat energy flows from the hotter object to the colder object.
  • Convection-due to mass movement in a fluid or gas, heat energy is transferred from a higher temperature area in a gas or liquid to a lower temperature area.
  • Radiation-Infrared radiation energy is transmitted in space through electromagnetic waves, without the need for conductive media. Therefore, the heat can be transferred in the concentrated area very quickly. Electromagnetic radiation can be further divided into four basic categories: ultraviolet, infrared (short/medium/long wavelength), microwave and radio frequency/induction.

Why can't we see infrared radiation?

Electromagnetic radiation is measured at wavelength "λ" or frequency "f". Both of these quantities are related by the formula λ= c÷f, where "c" is the speed of light (3 x 10-8 m/s). The wavelength of infrared radiation is not in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. See the figure next to it. One micrometer (µm) is equal to 10-6 meters.

Use the Stefan-Boltzmann law to find the total radiant energy "W" emitted by the object, in watts/square centimeter: W = εσT4, where "ε" is the emissivity factor, and "σ" is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant (5.67×10– 12 W / cm2K4), "T" is the surface temperature of the object in °K (0°C is equal to 273°K).

All substances emit radiant energy due to their limited temperature. Only at absolute zero (–273°C), when all molecular activity ceases, the substance will stop emitting radiant energy. In solids and liquids, the emission of radiant energy is considered a surface phenomenon, while for gases and certain translucent solids, such as glass and salt crystals (at high temperatures), it is considered a volume phenomenon.

Radiant heating is regarded by many as a complicated and difficult technology to use. Although radiation theory can be complicated, it is much easier to apply when given the appropriate heating equipment and guidance on which heating equipment is best for you. No matter what the application needs, LAIYUAN has the right products to meet your requirements.
